The Power of Jars in Ritual Work
For centuries, jars have been used as vessels of intention. In many traditions, they’re filled with herbs, oils, and items that carry energy — becoming a physical anchor for your prayers, affirmations, and manifestations.
A jar works because it holds energy in one place. When you layer ingredients with thought and purpose, you’re sealing your desires into a container that continues to “work” for you, long after it’s made.
Jars are a beloved old-school ritual tool — think of them as a candle’s long-playing cousin. Where a dressed candle works in the moment, a jar quietly holds and intensifies your intention over time. You layer herbs, crystals, petitions, photos, and oils into a small, contained space so their energies mingle and build toward your goal.
How jars are commonly used
- Honey & sugar jars: Sweeten situations, relationships, or dispositions.(Read to end for a "Starter Honey Jar" recipe and instruction.
- Hidden/“out of sight” jars: Tuck away to allow a petition to manifest without further attention (great for business goals or wish jars).
- Sour/vinegar/freeze jars: Used to cool down harmful behavior, stop gossip, or create distance. (These are handled differently and often disposed of afterward.)
- Carried jars: Small jars can be carried to amplify their aura around you.
A simple, practical jar ritual
- Decide your intention. Be specific.
- Write it down. Parchment is traditional, but any unlined paper works.
- Choose supporting items. Herbs, a crystal, a small petition, a photo (optional), and an oil drop or two.
- Layer with focus. Place items slowly, visualizing your desired outcome as you go.
- Seal & charge. Seal the jar and charge it with a candle or short ritual—speak a prayer or affirmation as you do.
- Place or carry. Set it on your altar, carry it with you, hide it, or, if it’s a “freeze” jar, place it in the freezer.
- Dispose intentionally. When a jar’s work is done (or for banishing jars), discard at a crossroads, in a dump, or bury it for grounding.
- Once sealed and charged, it’s best to let the jar do its work; if you want to add, create a new jar.
- If you’re working for someone else and lack a photo, write their name 3–9 times on paper and include it.
- Follow your intuition and keep the practice respectful and ethical.
Jars are simple, flexible, and powerful — they reward patience and clear intention. Start small, keep it intentional, and let your jar quietly unfold its work.

Honey Jars: A Sweet Ritual Guide
Honey jars are one of the most beloved and versatile jar rituals. At their core, they’re used to sweeten energy — shifting your own aura, softening situations, drawing in love, and encouraging kindness or favor from others. Whether for self-love, relationship harmony, or simply to brighten how others perceive you, honey jars are powerful tools of attraction.
The beauty is in the simplicity. A honey jar can be as minimal as a petition submerged in honey — no extras required. Honey itself is a potent sweetener, carrying centuries of symbolism for attraction, sweetness, and nourishment. If you’d like to go deeper, herbs, oils, and crystals can be added to align with specific intentions. Sugar jars are a faster-acting variation, made with sugar instead of honey.
Remember: there’s no single right way to craft your jar. Your intuition matters most — follow your heart and let your energy guide you.
